The butty is my favourite comfort food. Whether its chips (fries, in the United States) or bacon with plenty of brown sauce, the feeling I get when I imagine eating a good butty is complete bliss. I know its fattening, but the chip bap, barm or butty like other wonderful things bad for you in life, has to be enjoyed in moderation. Butty is a word often used in the United Kingdom for certain kinds of sandwiches such as the chip (fries), bacon or sausage butty.
I prefer to use the word butty because the word sandwich does not do the food justice. The turn of phrase eating a sandwich does not give me comfort or create the same feeling of bliss.
I took sandwiches to work in order to save on the cost of purchasing food from the staff refectory. At first my lunch break meal was considered as simply sustenance and consisted of boring old cheese or turkey ham or lettuce and tomato brought in bulk from the local supermarket, until I came across cheap baguettes that was virtually given away late one evening while shopping to replenishing my depleting stock of cheese. Things haven't been the same ever since, because the baguette made lunch breaks several times more interesting and encouraged me to experiment with different fillings, toppings and different types of bread.
The sandwich can be more than just cheese or some soggy lettuce trapped between two slices of bread and eaten as part of a packed lunch at work, school or a picnic. What my sandwich contains may be left to my creativity. An absolutely delicious sandwich may contain a combination of fresh seasonal salad vegetables, meat, cheese, other unique ingredients from leftovers and a variety of sauces, and the bread can be left bear, or it can be coated with a layer of butter or sunflower margarine, oil, mustard or other condiments to enhance flavour and texture.
Preparing a delicious sandwich for my lunch box that travels well, and delivers fulfilment at work and on picnics and other excursions like long hikes was quick and easy, and required little preparation. Eating a dull sandwich is no excuse especially with resources of hundreds of free sandwich related recipe ideas exist on the Internet. ButtyLink.com is a new completely free great website that has a large collection of Panini, sandwich filling and sandwich recipe ideas for meat, cheese, seafood, salad and much more. You can add your own ideas or recipes so that others can enjoy, I enjoy eating crisps (chips in the United States) as a filling for a sandwich for example. I bet I'm the only one that does it. When it comes to the fast food takeaway, forget Italian pizza or the Indian curry because sandwiches are great and someone needs to leap to their defence. Ask yourself why millions around the world eat at McDonalds (The biggest sandwich shop in the world). Surely they can't all be wrong.
